What is Fluoride Varnish?

  • A protective coating brushed onto your child's teeth to prevent tooth decay/cavities.

  • It is safe, quick, and does not hurt.

  • This can be applied as soon as the 1st tooth comes in.

  • It works best when reapplied every 3-6 months.

  • It helps even when someone is already using fluoride drops, tablets, rinses, tooth paste, or drinking fluoridated water.

What can I expect after the fluoride varnish is applied?

  • There may be a temporary change in the color of your child's teeth.

  • The teeth may initially look yellow, but will return to their normal color within a few days.

How do I care for my child's teeth after fluoride varnish is applied?

On the day the fluoride has been applied…

  • Drinks: Giving water is okay. Your child should only drink cold or warm liquids, not hot ones.

  • Foods: Your child should only eat cold or warm foods, not hot ones. Avoid all hard, crunchy, or chewy foods.

  • Brushing and flossing: Do not brush or floss your child's teeth the day that the fluoride has been applied. You can begin brushing and flossing their teeth like usual the following morning.
