What is a Residential Treatment Program?
Residential programs provide intensive help for patients with serious mental health and behavior problems. During the treatment period, patients temporarily live in a facility in a community setting where they are supervised and monitored by trained staff. Such programs may be indicated for patients who have not responded effectively to outpatient treatments, who are in need of further treatment following inpatient psychiatric care, and who have educational and behavioral needs that cannot be met in their local schools. An effective program can provide a comprehensive evaluation to assess the patient’s emotional, medical, educational, and social needs and support these needs safely with involvement of the family.
What is a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)?
Partial hospitalization programs provide a stepping stone between inpatient psychiatric care/residential treatment program and outpatient programs. Patients receive structured in-person psychiatric services at a facility during the day but do not stay overnight. Patients usually receive care 5 days/week for 6-8 hours/day and programs typically lasts for 2-4 weeks.
What is an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)?
Intensive outpatient programs can also bridge inpatient care with outpatient care. It provides more support and accountability than individual therapy but allows patients to continue to attend school and work. It may be offered in-person or virtually. Patients usually receive care 3-5 days/week for 2-5 hours/day and programs typically lasts for 8-12 weeks.
