What is Monarch eTNS?
- A non-medication, FDA-approved treatment option for children ages 7-12 years with ADHD
- External trigeminal nerve stimulation (eTNS) device that is connected to the child during sleep that sends low stimulating pulses to the trigeminal nerve throughout the night.
- Non-invasive, non-painful.
How does it work?
- The trigeminal nerve connects to the areas of the brain that are associated with attention, mood, and self-control. Stimulation of this nerve helps activate these regions of the brain.
- Studies show that nightly use significantly reduces ADHD symptoms, up to 47% decrease in ADHD Rating Scale IV (ADHD-RS-IV) scores.
When do patients typically see positive results?
- Full effects are usually seen within 4 weeks and even more positive effects by 8 weeks.
What are the possible side effects of the eTNS?
- No serious adverse events have been associated with its use.
- Most common side effects have included drowsiness, fatigue, increased appetite, trouble sleeping, teeth clenching, and headaches.
Who is eligible to use the Monarch eTNS System?
- For children ages 7-12 years who have been diagnosed with ADHD and not on any ADHD medications
Can patients younger than 7 or older than 12 use the Monarch eTNS System?
- eTNS is currently FDA-approved only for 7-12 year olds and studies of patients outside of this age range have not been conducted.
- Safety and effectiveness data are currently not available for patients outside of this age range.
How can patients get the Monarch eTNS System?
- For those patients who are eligible and interested, their clinician will need to complete an enrollment form that can be directly faxed to the Monarch Pediatric Care Program at 703-832-8447.
- Once the form has been received, the Monarch Pediatric Care Program will contact the patient’s insurance to determine coverage and work with the clinician on any prior authorizations that may be needed. The Monarch Pediatric Care Program can be reached at 877-765-7660 for further assistance.
Is Monarch eTNS covered by insurance?
- Not all insurance may cover the Monarch eTNS system. The Monarch Pediatric Care Program will work with the patient’s insurance directly to determine coverage.
- If the system is not covered, the Program can also work directly with patients’ families to review best purchasing options.
