Neuropsychological testing measures how your brain works and how well it works compared to others. It tests for a wide range of mental functions such as attention, visual and auditory processing, memory, problem solving, use of language and words, mood, and anxiety. It’s usually conducted by a clinical psychologist or neuropsychologist over a span of one to few days and provides a comprehensive picture of what a person’s mental strengths and weaknesses may be. This type of testing can be particularly helpful when a patient has several areas of challenges in their thinking process and can clarify underlying diagnosis(es). Most importantly, understanding where the challenges are allows patients, parents, and health care providers to develop a plan and determine appropriate interventions to best support areas of weakness and challenges within school, workplace, and home.
